Sean Edwards
These works are drawings, drawings that were made for the sake of thinking about something, working out a problem, working out how a sculpture might look or how work might be placed in an installation. They are not drawing for the sake of drawing, abstract entities that are about the hand and the mind. These fall between the practicality of drawing as a tool to convey a message and drawing as an artistic endeavour. From my sketchbook these were never made with the intention to be shown, they were made for myself to plot and visualise and are a direct interpretation of the artist with a material. There is no interference between the drawing and the future viewer looking upon the work. The only viewer was to be me. They have now been removed from the book, for this exhibition and will be sewn back in after it. The drawings are remnants of an activity that is unexhibited in my practice. It’s a direct response to an idea, a literal visualisation of something considered and conceptualised. They contain mistakes, lies and mcguffins. They relate to work that has been made, but are never of work that has been made. These leftovers that aren’t the activity (read sculpture/film) provide some indication of an artist’s relationship to subject matter, and perhaps go some way to bringing the viewer into the studio/process.
