Most of the time I just need to make something; I don’t always know why. My previous large-scale installations began to offer one type of solution but I soon felt the need to make something more permanent. I started by making a small scraper, something that could serve both as an artwork and as a functioning tool. Realising I was more interested in the making of these tools rather than in their functions I began making tools without the functioning element, in effect leaving just the handle and thus creating more of an art object than a tool. I still refer to these objects as ‘tools’ as that is what they evoke. The removal of the recognised ‘tool’ has embedded in them a new function as a means for provoking and promoting artistic discussion, eliciting such questions as their mandate to exist as objects in the art world.
